The holy month of Ramadan is a period where all cultures from around the world can unite to display empathy, tolerance, and respect. During the month of Ramadan, Muslims from all around the world measure and test their faith by fasting from dawn to dusk. It gives them a chance to inculcate self-discipline within themselves as well as compassion for the less fortunate.

In the UAE, the vibe during Ramadan is completely different. Evenings are filled with Iftar feasts, prayers, and social gatherings while day-time is a little more subtle and mundane. If you’re fasting, maintaining a healthy balance between your religious duties and professional life can be tricky.

Here are a few tips to help you maintain your productivity at work during Ramadan:

Prioritize

With work timings reduced by 2 hours during Ramadan, it gives you less time to complete your tasks. A good tip is to start your day off by listing your goals at work down and defining your high priority to low priority tasks. Tackle the ones which are important early during the day when your energy levels are higher to ensure you meet your deadlines.

Focus

Whilst fasting, The time usually spent during a lunch break or your regular visits to the pantry to make a cup of joe can be used to get your work done. In fact, even cutting out the smoking breaks will free up more of your time so that you don’t feel you are up against the clock. So, use this as an advantage and a reason to focus more on getting your work done efficiently.

Teamwork

Although fasting should not be used as an excuse for not performing your best at work, it’s normal to feel a little extra low and exhausted at times. Do not hesitate to let your team know if you’re struggling to complete a certain task and get a little support if required. An open communication policy will not only help you get through the day but will improve teamwork and cooperation which is always a plus point.

Balanced Diet

Sleep

A lack of sleep can have a drastic impact on your concentration levels the next day. All Muslims need to wake up right before sunrise to have Suhur (the morning meal) and offer morning prayers before starting a fast. This obviously hampers your usual sleep cycle. If you’re not a morning person, try sleeping a little earlier than usual to avoid feeling sleep deprived throughout the day.

Stay Hydrated

There’s a reason why we’re told to drink plenty of water throughout the day. The human body is comprised of 50-75% water and hydrating yourself is important to keep the body ticking. But, when you don’t have the option of drinking throughout the day, feeling thirsty and dehydrated is inevitable…the beaming sun in the UAE doesn’t help either. Drink as much water as you can during the non-fasting hours during Ramadan and eat foods such as cucumbers, watermelons, etc. that increase the water levels in your body. Try to also reduce your coffee intake as caffeine is known to dehydrate your body.
